The Volkswagen Beetle (officially Type 1) is a two-door rear-engine economy car intended for 5 occupants that was manufactured by Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. The need for a people’s car and its functional objectives were formulated by Adolf Hitler, who wanted a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for his country’s new road network. Although designed in the 1930s, due to World War II, the production shifted to military vehicles.
Ferdinand Porche and his team finalized the design in 1938, but the Beetles only began to be produced in significant numbers by the end of 1940.
The original model, with an 1100 cc engine had 25 HP and a top speed of 100 Km/h (62mph). The Beetle marked a significant trend with the rear air-cooled engine and rear-wheel-drive layout. Over time, front-wheel drive modern cars would dominate the market. In 1998 VW introduced the new Beetle, built on the contemporary platform of the Golf.
The last variant of the Beetle production ceased in 2019.
In the 1999 Car of the Century competition, Type 1 came fourth, after the Ford Model T, the Mini and the Citroen DS.
